Peridot – Green Apple of My Eye
August is the heart of summer, the time that all things summertime are at their peak. So it stands to reason that the birthstone for this month would be just as bright and cheery. The gemstone Peridot does not disappoint. Peridot has been the official birthstone for August since 1912 – the same year that The Jewelers Center building was created!
Peridot is always a variant of a shade of green, from yellow to olive to brown, but there’s always the presence of that quintessential green. The amount of iron inside the mineral olivine is what determines how green the gem is, with deeper shades of green being more valued than lighter shades.
Ancient Egyptians and Romans were enamored with this brilliant gemstone. The Romans aptly called it the ‘emerald of the evening’ because of its radiant green shine.
An interesting fact about peridot is that it is one of the few gemstones that is not formed in the Earth’s crust. It is formed much deeper in the Earth’s mantle and was often surfaced because of volcanic activity. In fact, only the diamond surpasses peridot when it comes to how deep it is formed within the Earth.
As with all gems, peridot has many myths attached to it. Depending on which lore you follow, you’ll find peridot to be effective in dispelling bad dreams, bringing calmness and attracting love. But one belief seems to be consistent through the years, and that is that setting peridot in gold will enhance its powers.
Has a jeweler from The Jewelers Center created a piece with peridot for you? We’d love to hear about it!
